About Whit

My experiences might easily fit many cycling fans' definitions of “living the dream.” Since getting hooked on the sport watching Lance Armstrong win the 1993 U.S. Pro Championship, I've raced as an amateur on Belgian cobbles, traveled Europe to help build a European pro team, and piloted that team from Malaysia to Mont Ventoux. As a former assistant director sportif with Mercury-Viatel, I've also seen the less dreamy side of the sport – the side rife with broken contracts, infighting, and positive dope tests. These days, I live with my lovely wife in Pennsylvania and share my experiences and views on the sport at Bicycling Magazine, the Embrocation Cycling Journal, and at my own site, Pavé.

2010 Team-By-Team Season Review: #13

#13 – Caisse d’Epargne (Preview Ranking: #8) What We Said: While some might hate to admit it, the presence of one rider can often elevate a team’s status.  As a matter of fact, we’ll see that twice in today’s portion of ranking, beginning here with Alejandro Valverde and Caisse d’Epargne. Love him or hate him, … Continue reading

2010 Team-By-Team Season Review: #14

#14(tie) – BMC Racing Team (Preview Ranking: #5) & Cervélo Test Team (Preview Ranking: #2) What We Said (BMC): The new-and-improved BMC Racing Team is the first of two Professional Continental teams in the top-5, proof that a Pro Tour license isn’t the only key to success. Jim Ochowicz must have had quite a bit … Continue reading

2010 Team-By-Team Season Review: #15

#15 – Vacansoleil (Preview Ranking: #17) What We Said: Vacansoleil is the epitome of a team trying to do more with less.  Look at its stars from 2009: Bozic, Hoogerland, and Westra are hardly household names, yet they accounted for more wins than several teams with bigger budgets and more recognizable rosters.  In addition to … Continue reading

2010 Team-By-Team Season Review: #16

#16 – Team Quick Step (Preview Ranking: #12) What We Said: It’s not good when your top Grand Tour rider’s name is Kevin Seeldraeyers.  No offense to the guy, but one top-15 finish in a Grand Tour is hardly anything to write home about—especially when you’re from Belgium, a country not known (at least lately) … Continue reading

Monday Musette – Spartacus Goes for Five, Kreuziger Targets the Giro

Here’s today’s Monday Musette: 1. Fabian Cancellara says he wants to join the monuments club, setting his 2011 goals as Liege-Bastogne-Liege and the Tour of Lombardy.  Given his history of winning just about whatever one-day event he wants (except Worlds) it seems likely that sooner or later, he’s going to be the first non-Belgian (and … Continue reading
